Standby for Zhaoping County.
One of the most visited destinations in China is Guilin in Guangxi Province. For adventure travelers who want to get away from the crowds at Guilin, Guangxi offers Zhaoping County with its forested mountains and untouched towns from the Ming Period.

Last November I traveled by boat through Zhaoping on the Gui River, finally reaching the Pearl River at Wuzhou then journeying down to HK. The trip was spectacular.

Presently I'm working with a tour group in Hong Kong putting together a river tour from HK to Guilin along the route I traveled. Our first go at an itinerary will be fairly soft--some riverboat travel, a little bus travel, and good hotels in Guilin. A final itinerary for the more adventurous will include mostly riverboats with much time spent in the Zhaoping backcountry.

Back at The Screen..
We'll be traveling in May and June, so now is the time to catch up on some website development. It's our hope to make this site more informative for adventure travelers--a place for travelers to catch their breath before embarking on another journey. A good start is to establish some links to other travel sites, some of them you may know, others we'll glean from our friends or by surfing through rec.travel.asia or rec.travel.latin-america.

Last fall I traveled for two months in China where, even in remote areas, I found ISP dial-ups. I'll post those locations once I go through my notes and find their addresses.

China Guides
Meanwhile, I'd like to introduce two fine interpreters and guides I met in China: Wan Jun (David) lives in Yueyang on the Yangtse River above Wuhan. David is a guide and all around good character at the temple complex at Yueyang. The site is an important stopping point for boats going to and from the three gorges region. If your tour plans call for a stop at Yueyang, e-mail David at: wangjun@public.yy.hn.cn David will show you around that fine old town and if time permits, direct you to the many restaurants where you can sample some of the critters from the Yangtze.

If you are in Yangshuo, Guangxi Province, look up Chen Wen Gang (Richard) at Lisa's Café. Richard has and e-mail address at: richard_tour@yahoo.com I traveled with Richard from Yangshuo to Wuzhou by river. He smoothed over a lot of bumps on that journey and it would have been very difficult without him.
